“I think ultimately writing got me through it all, when I was 7 I began to write songs. Through all the difficult times in my life, I’ve used writing to process. From song writing, to journaling my style finally developed, as I did, into poetry. 'If Only Roses Were Red' is my first published book, I started working on it as my 18th year began, in this broken city. I knew I had so much inside of me, and I knew I had to write to get it all out. I was told that I should wait, write it when I’m older, that I have time ahead of me, but my dream was too strong and my impatience grew. The purpose of my writing is to make people feel understood, to know they’re not alone. There will always be someone who will want to help, which is why I felt that a way to contact me should be inside the book. I want people to reach out, to feel vulnerable through reading my vulnerability, and to feel stronger because of hearing my weakness“ - Jen Read Jen's full story on our Facebook page. #humansofchch #otautahi #honeststories #christchurch #chch #humansof

"I’m father of two wee girls, 4 and 6. Stella will tell you shes 6 and a half, cos it’s a race when you’re young, you just want to get older. Andie-Rose, she’ll probably tell you she’s 4 and a half. They’re very different. I’ve been taking Stella surfing over the summer, she’s come out on the surfboard a few times. The challenge has been knowing how much you can push. Last summer I took my paddleboard out and we went out and caught some waves with her lying on the front of it. The waves were about chest high and she was lying on  the front of the board saying “you can do this Stella, you can do this”. It was her talking herself into it, mentally preparing herself for what she was going to deal with. It was a really good attitude. As a parent, You don’t know where you instil these things but somehow it came through. It was a nice surprise." - Blair check out Blair's full story on our Facebook page @humansofchch #humansof #humansofchch #Otautahi #honeststories #hetangata #lovechch #portrait #christchurch
‘Darker seasons call for deeper perspectives; 'Shades of nature that make my dimples ache. A colour palette of longing. A muddy green and flimsy orange Colours of votive Autumn. The sacrificial tinge. I’m in possession of a cryptic medicine.' - Leigh-vii #humansofchch #otautahi #honeststories #beautifulpeople #humansof #hetangata #autumn #poetry #portrait
"The first shift away from criminality back then happened when I was around 22 years old after I had a few spiritual experiences. The biggest trigger, however, was my concern for the hole in the ozone layer. Spray cans were not ozone friendly at that point and that motivated me to stop using them. That was a giant lifestyle change for me because at the time most of my friends and I were graffiti artists. We were also smoking marijuana every day and drinking alcohol on a regular basis too. So, I quit everything in one go and for a while, I was just kind of doing nothing except eating and sleeping. That led me to meditation.  I eventually just learned to face my fears, that meant really embracing love and the idea that behind everything is a motivation towards love, toward our true self." - Richard/Pops Check out Richards full story on our Facebook page @humansofchch #humansofchch #streetartchch #christchurch #otautahi
"New Zealand is multicultural, but in Christchurch there are only two shops selling Indian garments. The mix of cultures here means that often some couples will want two different ceremonies, one with a more western style and the other with traditional Indian bridal wear, so we cater for that. We don't have many festivals like this in Christchurch, so its a good opportunity to see our community grow. Its great to be able to explain part of our culture to the people of Christchurch." - Vijay, Manjula, Dimpal and Payal At the Diwali Indian festival of Lights, Cathedral Square #humansofchch #diwali #indianfestivaloflights #yogis #christchurch #cathedralsquare
